Oliver Twist is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens. Was originally published as a serial novel in monthly appearance in the magazine Bentleys Miscellany, between February 1837 and April 1839. At first, the author had intended to form part of a larger work, The Mudfog Papers. All deliveries were to illustrate an engraving by George Cruikshank. Oliver Twist is one of the earliest social novels in the history of literature. Draws attention to their readers on various social ills of the era, such as child labor or the use of children to commit crimes. Dickens mocks the hypocrisy of his time dealing with these serious issues with sarcasm and black humor. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of the harshness of his life as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widespread in the 1830s.
